We’ve had the unique opportunity to build this company from the ground up, with a few important things in mind; quality, dependability, and you, our client. In order to produce costumes of the highest possible quality, we’ve invested in hardware and materials far above and beyond that of your average tailor. This attention to detail and durability make it easy for us to stand out from the competition.
Industrial Sewing Machines:
The use of industrial-grade machines is one of our most notable and important advantages. These industrial machines allow us to use a much stronger and thicker thread when building our costumes. These aren’t your mother’s sewing machines. The threads that we use are up to ten times thicker and far stronger than that which a conventional sewing machine can use. In fact, just one of these threads has a tensile strength of more than 130lbs. Along with its tremendous strength, the thread is also extremely durable. It’s specially formulated to withstand powerful UV rays, and even the toughest wash cycles. What most people don’t realize is that while stitches hold together pieces of fabric, each stitch weakens the fabric slightly. This becomes a larger problem when trying to sew through multiple layers of thick or extremely strong fabrics, as more stitches are required to penetrate the material. Our machines, however, are powerful enough to penetrate multiple layers of fabric at once, allowing for a single pass single stitch operation on even the thickest of materials. This means stronger stitching, and greater durability.
High Strength Fabric Glues
We knew that off-the-shelf fabric glue would not live up to our clients’ expectations, so we found a special supplier to provide us with custom batches of high strength, long life fabric glues.
Fabric Quality and Stock
All of our fabrics are hand selected, with samples of each put through a series of strength and durability tests before they come anywhere near your costume. We buy large rolls of each material, directly from manufacturers and large disturbers, which allows us to have a massive and varied collection of textures and colors at our disposal. At any given time we have between 500-1000 yards of fabric in stock. Buying our fabric in quantity allows us to save money, which we then pass on to you.
This is the best part about our quality; it does not come at a price. Costumes of this type are no small investment, and as such, our clients expect far more than shoddy stitching and paper-thin fabric. Your costume should be perfect, and that perfection should last through years of loving use. We take pride in our work, which is why we use only the very best equipment and materials.
A little bit about the maker...
FurrHappens was started in January 2006 by Lindsey, and was inspired by several years of casual costume design for summer camps. Lindsey has a background in graphic design, small business, program management, and a lifelong love of creative arts. Her passion and dedication for her costumes continue to push the edge as she strives for the best and is willing to take on almost any challenge. The company has since moved twice and grown much; initially started in Calgary Canada, then moving to California for 3 years, and now permanently back to Calgary. The entire company is operated, managed, and marketed by Lindsey with the occasional help of a friend, so there are some very busy days!
